russia in reveloution Flashcards
the july days (causation)
first machine gun regiment called to send 500 of its men to the battlefront in support of the June offensive, they refused claiming their right to protect Petrograd, they appealed to other units Vyborg’s radical factory workers for support
the july days (bolshevik involvement)
mid level bolsheviks jumped on the garrisons mutiny, acting without approval of Lenin they persuaded the soldiers and civilians to overthrow the provisional government by force, reinforced by 20,000 Kronstadt sailors all elements for a successful bolshevik uprising seemed present
the July days (decision + consequences)
while all parts of a successful revolution seemed present Lenin called off the revolt believing if the bolsheviks seized power in that moment they would not have kept it, as a result several prominent bolsheviks fled the country, even more were arrested and the red guard were de-armed. the result of the July days was a broken bolshevik organisation that had seemingly missed their opportunity to claim power
june offensive (decision)
Kerensky decided to launch a large scale attack on Germany and Austria. the decision was seen as bizarre as Russia was war weary and morale in the army was low, troops were told the offensive was needed to stale a known german-austrian attack on Russia
june offensive (reason)
there was a planned large scale co-ordinated attack in mid-1917, members of provisional government were reluctant to break this agreement, revolutionary defensists argued a large scale attack would give them the grounds to push for defencism, as well as this Kerensky had visions of leading Russia to victory
june offensive (results)
was a total disaster, initial gains were followed by a german counter attack, within a week germans advanced 150 miles into Russian territory, left hopes of revolutionary defencists in tatters and increased attractions of bolsheviks
