Rural Magagment and Effectivness Flashcards
fuel efficient stoves
stoves that trap more heat than open fires therefore less trees have to be cut down for fire wood
e.g. Eritrea , Mogogos
animal fences
movable fencing allowing farmers to control grazing areas allowing soil to recover ag different times of the year
people didn’t traditionally close off their land so tbis has led fo disputes over who get to use the areas. Everyone must agree
magic stones
lines of stones are placed along contours of gently sloping land and trap rain water/ soil
Doubles physical labour to build but most sahel regions have large work force. so successful that most other sahel countries also learned to do it from BURKINA FASO
intercropping
taller plants are planted next to shorter plants, adding protection from wind erosion and stop sheet wash.
Worked well as different plants are harvested at different times of, so roots remain and hold soil together
New trees
afforestation e.g. GREAT GREEN WALL OF SENAGAL progect to plant drought resistant ACACIA trees . This has increased interception reducing surface run off and sheetwash .
Decreases wind erosion, roots blind soil and trees provide shade stoping soil baking
Expensive people have been cutting and burning trees for fuel reduces farm land
education
teach farmers about consequences of rural land development
ZAI PITS: small holes filled with compost attracting termites which increase soil fertility
Increased production of millet, easy to do, prevents wind erosion. Has been successful in BURKINA FASO
Reduce herd sizes = less soil compaction by hooves . Not very effective as big herd seen as a status symbol
