Glaciation Flashcards
1
Q
what is plucking
A
when water freezes onto rocks then plucks them away from tbe back wall
2
Q
what is abrasion
A
when rocks stuck in the ice grind the hollow like sand paper
3
Q
what is frost shattering
A
when water gets into small crack, freezes and expands shattering the rock
4
Q
what is the formation of an esker
A
- meandering ridge along a valley floor
- they are formed when meltwater gets underneath the glacier
- made up of meltwater, sands and gravel - sorted by size as the heavier rocks are dropped first by the water
- Stones are rounded as flowing water rounding them by erostion
- When temperatures rise or latitudes are low glascier starts to melt
5
Q
formation of drumlin
A
- hills of unsorted glacial depostits
- formed when the glacier becomes overloaded by sediment
- The glacier streamlines the sediment as it overflows
- found in swarms
6
Q
terminal moraine
A
- ride across a valley floor which is unsorted
- made up of glacial deposits
- glacier moves downhill bulldozing sediment infront of the snout
- on lower altitudes or when temperatures rise glacier loses power and moraine is deposited
