hydrosphere Flashcards
what are pools
deeper areas of water where greater erosion occurs
what are riffles
shallower areas of water where friction reduces speed and erosive power
what is hydraulic action
the sheer force of water compressing aor into cracks causing the rock to break
what is corrasion
when rocks and pebbles are hirled against river banks or bed causing pieces of the rock to break off
what is corriosion
when salt and other acids in the water dissolve minerals in the water causing the rocks to break up
what is attrition
when rock and boulders bump into each other causing to break up into smaller particles
what happens at the inner bank of a meander
river flows slowest on the inside leading to deposition
what happens as the river erodes vertically
v shaped valley
the sides of the valley are exposed to freeze thaw weathering which loosens the rocks, some fall, and steepends the valley sides
what happens to the rocks which fall due to freeze thaw
they undergo corrosion and transported down stream and the channel becomes wider and deeper creating a v shaped valley between interlocking spurs
what does helicoidal flow do ( meander)
moves material across a river channel leading to rivers cliffs and beaches forming
what happens over time when hard rock is unsupported
falls due to gravity into the plunge pool
what happens when the waterfall retreats
a gorge is formed
