Rural Flashcards
Rural land degradation (RLD) leads to fewer crops being grown… (SE)
This means that there will be…
Famine and food shortages
Less food to export (less money coming in)
Could lead to Conflict
RLD leads to widespread poverty… (SE)
This leads to…
An increase in crime rates
Potential conflict over money
Less people being able to buy necessities so standard of living will decrease
RLD leads to non drought resistant vegetation dying… (ENV)
This means that…
Less food/ crops are being made
Leads to malnourished population and a lowered standard of living
RDL leads to starvation and death of animals… (BOTH)
This leads to…
Less food being produced from animals
Farmers livestock takes a dive so does their profit
Could lead to more extreme poverty…
What are the environmental effects of RLD
- Soil erosion
- Non drought resistant crops dying
- Starvation and death of animals
- Soil blown into rivers causing increased sediment and decreased water quality
What are the socioeconomic effects of RLD
- Widespread poverty
- Famine and food shortages
- Starvation and death of animals
- Soil blown into rivers causing increased sediment and decreased water quality.
What are the strategies used to help manage RLD?
- Crop rotation
- Afforestation
- Stone lines
- Coppicing
- Terracing
- Zai planting pits
What is crop rotation?
Growing differenct crops on a patch every year, or move the farmed area around each year. This allows previously used soil to recover its minerals and fertility to avoid soil exhaustion. The grass that is left over provides a protective layer over the soil so it doesn’t blow away.
What is afforestation?
