Q

How do volcanoes contribute to climate change?

A
  1. Emit gases such as C02 when they erupt - contributes to greenhouse effect. they also eject pulpur dioxide which when combined with oxygen and water fors sulphic acid which contributes to cooling.
the ash can block solar radiation.

Q

How does sunspot activity contribute to climate change?

A

The sun has periods where it emits additional energy and time where’s its less active, sunspots are dark spots on the sun which occur during times of additional energy. This can result in increased brightness and more energy being received by the earth. This happens in 11 year cycles.

Q

How do fumaroles contribute to climate change

A

Fumaroles are vents in the earths surface which release CO2, and other gases. These gases can absorb solar radiation which can then warm the planet.

Q

What are the human causes of climate change?

A
  1. Increased population (increased demand for electricity)
  2. increased car ownership (for CO2 released from engines)
  3. deforestation (less CO2 being absorbed by trees)
  4. Landfill (methane released as waste decomposes)
  5. More cars on road (exhaust emissions are a source of nitrous oxide)
  6. Rising food demand (increased use of fertilisers which adds to nitrous oxide in the atmosphere)

Q

Rising sea levels lead to…

A

Displacement of people loss of agricultural land, and destruction of property. Eg. Maldives

Q

Drought leads to…

A

Land drying out leading to diseased crops, this could lead to starvation, and famine resulting in the mass migration of people out of the area. Could also lead to conflict and risk of forest fires e.g Australia.

Q

Extreme weather results in…

A

An increase in intensity and frequency of storms, this could destroy housing and infrastructure which will affect livelihood and businesses. May cause mass migration of people out of the area.

Q

Population increase effects climate change by…

A

The population on earth is constantly increasing which leads to increased food demand and production. Mainly from fossil fuels and a need for electricity which you get from burning fossil fuels (CO2)

Q

Increased car ownership leads to…

A

A higher demand of petrol and diesel which when burned release co2. Especially when cat in traffic revving engines and changing gears. CO2 is a green house gas.

Q

Deforestation

A

Especially in the Amazon rainforest, deforestation has lead to less carbon dioxide being absorbed by trees and more CO2 being released when trying to get rid of the trees quickly by burning them

Q

Landfill

A

Methane - can be released from landfill sites and waste decomposes . As population increased more waste is produced so more methane is released.
