Rupture of Membranes Flashcards
Definition of premature rupture of membranes (PROM)
ROM occurring at >18 hrs before labor
baby is term, mom isn’t ready yet
What is PPROM?
ROM occurring before 37 wks GA
baby isn’t ready, mom isn’t ready either
What tests are used to confirm ROM?
POOLING: collection of fluid in vaginal vault
NITRAZINE: blue color change due to the alkalinity of amniotic fluid
FERNING: estrogens causing crystallization of salts in amniotic fluid when it dries (Note: do not sample fluid directly from cervix)
Oligohydramnios (especially if fluid was normal)
INDIGO CARMINE Dye injection via Amniocentesis (look for leakage of fluid from cervix onto tampon)
AMNISURE: identifies placental alpha-macroglobulin-1 via immunoassay which is sensitive and specific
