Induction and Augmentation of Labor Flashcards
Definition of Labor
regular uterine contractions that cause cervical change in either effacement or dilation
Definition of Prodromal Labor
False labor. Irregular contractions that vary in duration, intensity, and intervals, and yield little or no cervical change
Methods of labor induction?
Prostaglandins (PGE2, PGE1M Misoprostol)
Oxytocic agents
Mechanical dilation (Cervidil pessary, 30 or 60 cc Foley bulb)
Artificial ROM (amniotomy)
Maternal and Obstetric contraindications to using prostaglandins
Asthma, glaucoma
Prior C-sections
Non-reassuring fetal testing
Risks to using PGE2 gel
Uterine hyperstimulation
Tetanic contractions
At what rate would the 30 or 60 cc Foley bulb dilate cervix?
2-3 cm in 4-6 hrs.
With what agent is labor induction formally begun?
Oxytocin IV drip (rapidly metabolized)
What should you look for right after puncturing the amniotic sac during an amniotomy?
Ensure umbilical cord prolapse has not occurred
In what ways can adequacy of contractions be determined?
By the progress of cervical change
Via Intrauterine Pressure Catheter (IUPC)
