RUM FACTS Flashcards
What is rum?
Rum is a spirit distilled from sugar cane, or sugar cane by-products.
How is light rum typically distilled?
Light rum is usually distilled at the very high proof range of 170 to 190 proof. Distilled water is then added to bring the proof down to 80 to 90 proof.
How are dark rums aged differently?
Dark rums are aged in charred oak barrels, similar to bourbons. Puerto Rican law requires one year of aging for white rums and three years for gold rums. Dark rums have caramel added to intensify the color.
Where are rums mostly produced?
Rums are made from sugar cane, and are mostly produced in the Caribbean, including the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and British Colonies.
How was rum made popular?
Rum was made popular when an American mining engineer in Cuba combined rum, lime juice, water, and sugar to produce a mixed drink. He named it after the copper mine in Daiquiri. Hence the daiquiri was born.
