Green Cross Code
- Find a safe place to cross
Crossing nearby use it
Safer to use a subway, footbridge etc.
Otherwise choose a place where you can cleary see in all directions
Try to avoid crossing between parked cars on a blind bend or close to brow of a hill
Move to a space where drivers can see you clearly
Dont cross road diagonally - Stop before you get to kerb
Where you can see if anything is coming
Dont get too close to traffic
If no pavement keep back from edge of road to make sure you can still see approaching traffic - Look all around for traffic and listen
Traffic can come from any direction
Listen because sometimes you can hear traffic before you see it - If traffic coming let it pass
Look all around and listen
Dont cross until theres a safe gap in the traffic and certain you have plenty of time
Even if traffic a long way off it may be approaching very quickly - When safe go straight across road dont run
Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross in case traffic you dont see is coming
Dont walk diagonally
At a junction
When crossing or waiting to cross road other traffic should give way
Look for traffic turning into road especially from behind you and cross at a place where drivers can see you
If started to cross and traffic wants to turn into road you have priority and they should give way
Pedestrian safety barriers
Where there are barriers cross road only at gaps provided for pedestrians
Dont climb over barriers or walk between them and road
Tactile paving
Raised surfaces that can be felt underfoot to provide warning and guidance for blind people
Most common are raised studs which used at crossing points with dropped kerb or rounded raised bars used at level crossings or at top and bottom of steps and at other hazards
One-way streets
Check which way traffic is moving
Dont cross until safe to do without stopping
Bus and cycle lanes
Take care when crossing as traffic may be moving fasting than in other lanes or against flow of traffic
Routes shared with cyclists
Cycle tracks may run alongside footpaths or pavements and be seperated by change of material, verge, kerb or white line
These routes may incorporate short lengths of tactile paving to help blind plind to stay on correct side
Pedestrian side may have flat-topped bars running acorss the direction of travel
Cyclist side same bars orientated in driection of travel
Some routes might not be seperated and have to share same space
Cyclists should respect your safety but also take care not to endanger them
Remain aware of environment and avoid unncessary directions
Where signs indicate some routes ahred between pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and horse drawn vehicles
Cycloist horse riders and drivers of horse drawn vehicles should respect your safety but you should also not obstruct them

Parked vehicles
Use outsides edges of vehicles as if they were the kerb
Stop there and make sure you can see all around and that traffic can see you
Make sure theres a gap between any parked vehicles on other side so you can reach the pavement
Never cross road in front of or behind any vehicle whilst its engine is running especially a large vehicle as driver may not see you
Reversing vehicles
Dont cross behind vehicle while reversing, showing white reversing lights or sounding a warning
Moving vehicles
Must not get onto or hold onto a moving vehicle
At night
Wear something reflective to make easier for others to see you
If no pedestrian crossing nearby cross road near a street light so that traffic can see you more easily
