Pavements and footways
Used if provided
Including any path along side of road
Avoid being next to kerb with back to traffic
If you need to step into road look both ways first
Remain aware of environment
Avoid unncessary distractions
Show due care and consideration for others
If no pavement
Keep to right hand side of road so that you can see oncoming traffic
Take extra care and be prepared to walk in single file and keep close to side of road
May be safer to cross the road before sharp right hand bend so oncoming traffic have better chance of seeing you
Cross back after bend
Help road users to see you
Wear or carry something light coloured, bright or flourescent in poor daylight conditions
When dark use reflective materials which can be seen by drivers using headlights up to 3 times as far away as non-reflective materials
Young children
Not out alone on pavement or road
When taking children out keep between them and traffic and hold hands firmly
Strap young children into pushchairs
When pushing a child in a pram dont push it into the road when checking to see if clear to cross
Organised walks or parades
Large groups of people walking along road should use pavement if available
If not available keep to left
Look outs positioned at front and back of group
Wear flourescent clothes in daylight and reflective in dark
At night lookout in front should show a white light and one at back a red light
People on outside of large groups should also carry lights and wear reflective clothing
Motorways
Must not be on motorways or slip roads except in an emergency
