Rules and Laws Flashcards
What does a shift to the left or right of the oxygen dissociation curve do to oxygen delivery?
RIGHT
- greater oxygen delivery
LEFT
- lower oxygen delivery
What is the Haldane Effect?
As oxygen is removed from Hb, Hb’s ability to pick up C02 is increased.
What is the Bohr Effect?
The oxygen dissociation curve is shifted to the right due to changes in tissue conditions;
(Increased pC02, Increased H+, Increased temp, Increased 2,3..)
- meaning more 02 is released.
What is Henry’s Law?
The amount of gas dissolved in a given type/ volume of liquid at a constant temperature is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in equilibrium with the liquid..
What does Fick’s Law of Diffusion state in terms of surface area and surface thickness?
Gas diffusion across a surface is inversely proportional to surface thickness and proportional to the area
What is Dalton’s Law?
The total pressure of a mixture of gases equals the sum of the partial pressure of each component gas
What is the law of LaPlace?
Smaller alveoli have a greater tendency to collapse
What is meant by alveolar interdependence?
Alveolar interdependence maintains alveolar patency through the elastic recoil of surrounding alveoli, preventing alveolar collapse
What is Boyle’s law?
At any constant temperature, as the volume of a gas increases, the pressure it exerts decreases
