RSO Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is diffusion
Spreading out from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. This does not require energy
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a membrane. Plants use it to get water for their roots
What is active transport?
Moving molecules from an area of low concentration to higher concentration. This requires energy
Give 2 examples of active transport
Endocytosis and exocytosis
What is endocytosis?
A process that transports large molecules into the cell. Material comes in contact with the cell. Then it is enclosed within its own membrane. Next, it is brought inside the cell and released from the membrane into the cell.
What is exocytosis?
A process that transports large molecules out of the cell. Material inside the cell is enclosed within its own membrane. It is taken to the cell membrane, with which it then fuses. After that, the material is released out of the cell.
What is hyydrophobic?
Water fearing
What is hydrophilic?
water loving
What is a lipid bilayer?
It is what makes up the cell membrane. There are two layers of lips with the hydrophilic heads making up the outside of the membrane and the hydrophobic tails making up the inside of the cell membrane.
Does a semi permeable membrane let all molecules through it?
No.
What 3 characteristics of life relate to cellular transport?
- All organisms take in energy. Food molecules are transported into cells.
- All organisms get rid of waste. Waste molecules are transported out of cells.
- All organisms grow. Cells need to transport molecules into them as the raw
material for organelles to build cell-growing molecules.
Is the head of the lipid bilayer hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
hydrophilic
Is the tail of the lipid bilayer hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
hydrophobic
