What is secularisation?
The idea thar religious beliefs, practises and organisations are becoming less important in society
What did a 2015 Study show about religion?
The Church of England decreased to 17% from 40%
Muslims rose to 5% from 0.5%
The fasting growing religion was no religion at 49%
What are the 3 causes of secularisation?
- Rationalisation
- Social Fragmentation
- Decline of Community
What is rationalisation?
Society has become more committed to following practical principles such as science politics and economics instead of religion
What is Social Fragmentation?
Society develops specialised institutions such as economy, law and politics and religion is no longer relevant to them.
What is decline of community?
Modern life is increasingly organised and regulated by state departments rather than local communities, religion used to be at the heart of the community but now it is irrelevant.
What are signs that religion has decreasing power and authority?
Fewer people attend church services
Fewer people want to work in Churches
Churches are getting closed or sold off
Fewer people are getting married
Fewer people get baptised and then fewer ger CoE recognised
Festivals such as Easter and Christmas have lost their Christian values
What are sign that religion does not have decreasing power?
Many people still hold religious beliefs
Religion is important in many social groups e.g Muslims
New religions are experiencing new popularity
Religion is still strong elsewhere, such as in the Muslim World, Latin America and Africa
What is humanism?
A way of seeing and reacting to the world using science and logic and rejecting religion
What are 3 key principles for humanists?
They have scientific views that reject supernatural ones
They have concerns for humans and animals based on reason
The feel the need to create meaning in their own life as there is no life after death
What is the BHO?
British Humanist Organisation formed when groups of humanists merged together
What does the BHO want?
Disestablish the Chirch
Remove the anglican bishops from Lords
Abolish faith schools
What would the National Secular Society say about compulsory religious education?
They are not against teaching about religions in our world but they are against promoting religion
What would the BHO say about compulsory religious education?
They oppose worship in state schools as it ignores a childs right to freedom
