What are the 2 respiratory centers?
Medulla Oblongata and Pons
Diaphragms contracts (moves down)
Inhalation
Diaphragm relaxes (moves up)
Exhalation
• Involves chiefly the external
intercostal muscles & other
accessory muscles
(sternocleidomastoid)
• Observed by the movement of the
chest upward and outward.
Costal/Thoracic
• Involves contraction & relaxation
of diaphragm
• Observed by movement of
abdomen
DIAPHRAGMATIC/ABDOMINAL
• refers to the regularity of the expirations & the
inspirations
• can be described as regular & irregular
Respiratory Pattern/Rhythm
On average, an individual inspires 500 ml
of air & expires approximately 450 ml. of
air (Normal)
• Deep
• Shallow
RESPIRATORY DEPTH
• refers to those aspects of breathing that are different
from normal, effortless breathing
• sound of breathing is normally silent
RESPIRATORY QUALITY
quick, shallow breaths
