1
Q

describe the method in the investigation where we test how the mass of magnesium affects the temperature change in hydrochloric acid

A

add 20cm^3 of hydrochloric acid and add it to a polystyrene cup
record the starting temperature
put 1cm long piece of magnesium n the cup and then put the thermomertre in followed by the lid
record the highest temperature the reaction reaches
rinse apparatus and and repeat test for 2cm 3cm and 4cm lengths
calculate the temperature change for each of your results before then calculating an average

Q

how could we make the experiment where we investigated the impact of amount of magnesium has on the temperature change better and what were the risks?

A

by using a better insulator that does not let any heat get lost

hydrochloric acid could potentially get in the eyes and damage them so we wore goggles

Q

describe an experiment testing whether not a reaction is exo nor endo thermic

A

pour in your solution into the polystyrene cup and record the starting temperature
add you second substance into the cup and record the biggest energy change the reaction the reaction reaches
calculate the change in temperature and see if its endo or exo thermic

Q

describe a method for the experiment where we tested the energy change when hydrogen peroxide is catalytically decomposed in the prescence of manganese

A

add 20ml of hydrogen peroxide to a polystyrene cup and record the starting temperature
add 1 spatula of manganese oxide and thermometre in the cup then put the lid on
recordnthe highest temperature the reaction reaches.
rinse apparatus and repeat two more times
calculate the temperature change and then the average

Q

what were the risks and observations in the experiment where we investigted the temperature change when hydrogen peroxide was catalytically decomposed in the prescence manganese oxide

A

hydrogen peroxide could potentially damage eyes so we wore goggles

there was fizzing and bubbling

Q

describe the method for the experiment where we put unkown metals into a rectivity series by meauring the energy realease in a displacement reaction

A

measure 25cm^3of 0.5M CuCl^2 solutonusing a measuring cylinder . place it in a polystyrene cup
record the starting temperature with a thermometre
weigh 1 gram of unknown metal A and add the metal into the cup and start the stopwatch
constantly mix the reaction
record the highest temperature the reaction reaches in 2 minutes
calculate the temperature change and rinse out apparatus
repeat with metals B C D
