RPD parts, purpose, physics Flashcards
What is the goal of an RPD
- replace missing teeth
- improve function
- support compromised teeth
- Do no harm
What are major connectors
The portion of the RPD that goes from one side of the arch to the other and connects all the parts
What are rests
the portion of the RPD that sits into the rest seats that are cut into the abutment teeth. these resist occlusal forces and prevent the RPD from sliding gingivally.
What are rest seats
a prep cut into an abutment tooth into which the rests on the RPD will sit.
What are direct retainers
They are the retentive portion of the RPD that resists removal forces. (Clasp assemblies)
What is indirect retention
rests that are placed perpendicularly to, and far from the axis of rotation in a Class 1 or 2 RPD. They resist leverage when chewing sticky foods
What is a proximal plate
the portion of an RPD that rests against the walls of the teeth opposing edentulous areas (guide planes). they determine the path of insertion of the RPD.
What are guide planes
Vertical planes cut onto the surface of teeth facing edentulous areas. they articulate with the proximal plates of the RPD and determine the path of insertion.
What are minor connectors
the extensions of the major connectors that connect each component of the RPD to the major connector.
What is the denture base
the portion of the denture that sits on the gingiva.
