How is violence presented in the Old Testament?
- violence is condemned in the story of Abel and Cain, a murder of jealousy and anger, God condemning Abel’s sinful act “whoever sheds human blood, their blood be shed”
-violence is allowed however in wars that he ordered “prepare for war!”
What did Jesus teach on violence?
Jesus taught “blessed are the peacemakers” and “turn the other cheek” in response to violence
- leading to pacifism(wrong to use violence in all context)
Jesus also displayed righteous anger, reacting violently to sinful people
- leading to belief in conditional pacifism, times when violent actions are justified
What are Christian views on their role in violent conflicts?
- some Christian choose to serve in the armed forces; believing their services bring peace, protecting innocent, challenging evil

What are Christian views on being involved in politics - it is wrong?
- it is wrong to be involved; authorities are appointed by God, so should be respected and trusted
- it is wrong,; focus should be Evangelism not politics

- moral obligation to be involved in politics, as it is important to speak up against injustice
- voting as a way that best fits Christian values
What is terrorism?
The illegal use of violence to cause fear and intimidation for political aims, often carried out against civilians
Why do people take terrorist action?
- they feel there is no alternative
- they believe their actions have the potential to force change
- their use of terror is an appropriate response to the given situation
Christian attitudes to terrorism.
Catholic and C of E - hatred, terror, violence is not appropriate solution, seek a peaceful resolution. They oppose terrorist activity, recognise forceful response to terrorism.

What is Just war theory?
When a war is fought, meeting criteria.
Jus ad Bellum, Jus in bello, Jus post bellum
What is Jus ad Bellum?
- war must be started by proper authority
- reason to go to war must be just
- everything must be done so good should be the outcome

-war must be last resort - force used no more than necessary to win
what is Jus in bello?
- civilians not harmed
- appropriate force used
-international conventions followed
what is Jus post Bellum?
- punishing war criminals
- helping retrain military, police in defeated countries
What is a Holy war?
A Holy war states physical violence is sometimes necessary to defend a religion
- the achievement of a religious goal
- authorisation of a religious leader
-promise of spiritual reward for those who take part
