How is violence presented in the Old Testament?

A
  • violence is condemned in the story of Abel and Cain, a murder of jealousy and anger, God condemning Abel’s sinful act “whoever sheds human blood, their blood be shed”
    -violence is allowed however in wars that he ordered “prepare for war!”

What did Jesus teach on violence?

A

Jesus taught “blessed are the peacemakers” and “turn the other cheek” in response to violence
- leading to pacifism(wrong to use violence in all context)
Jesus also displayed righteous anger, reacting violently to sinful people
- leading to belief in conditional pacifism, times when violent actions are justified

  • some Christian choose to serve in the armed forces; believing their services bring peace, protecting innocent, challenging evil

A

Catholic and C of E - hatred, terror, violence is not appropriate solution, seek a peaceful resolution. They oppose terrorist activity, recognise forceful response to terrorism.

A
  • war must be started by proper authority
  • reason to go to war must be just
  • everything must be done so good should be the outcome

    -war must be last resort

A

A Holy war states physical violence is sometimes necessary to defend a religion
- the achievement of a religious goal
- authorisation of a religious leader
-promise of spiritual reward for those who take part
