What time should a Roving Umpire arrive to a match?
45 Minutes prior to the start of the match.
The Roving Umpire must know the following items before the match begins: (seven)
a) Match Format
b) Who the Coaches and DPAs are
c) The trainer and their location
d) Bathroom locations and the time allowed for bathroom breaks
e) The communication system among officials
f) Where the Referee will be
g) Court assignments/crew rotation schedule
The Roving Umpire Court Preparation: (Eight Items)
a) Net tension
b) Singles sticks (if needed and available)
c) Net height (after adjustments (singles sticks/net tension)
d) Court is clean, old balls are cleared
e) Water/cups are available
f) Scoring devices are cleared
g) Have new and like-wear balls readily available
h) Know-off court access (for tracking stray balls.
The Roving Umpire: Starting the Matches (Four Items)
a) Check that the proper players are on the proper courts.
b) Have a pre-match meeting with the players, including the coin toss.
c) Timing the warm up (if any)
d) Making warm-up time announcements (if there is a warm up)
ITA Cases and Decisions: Question- You are roving six courts at a DIII dual match. You are unable to start every match. As you make your way to court 5 and 6 you learn that the wrong players are playing each other. On court 5 it is 1-1 and on court 6 it is 1-0 and 40-0. How do you correct this error?
Id you are the Referee, move the players to the correct courts. If you are not the Referee, notify the Referee to hand the situation. THE PLAYED GAMES DONOT COUNT AND EACH MATCH START OVER FROM THE BEGINNING.
Roving the Matches: What is the Ideal position for a Roving Umpire?
The ideal position for a Roving Umpire is at the net post of a court.
If assigned to two courts, stand between the two courts at the net post.
If assigned to three or four courts shift back and fourth occasionally between each court.
Roving Techniques (six)
a) Use the same techniques a Chair Umpire would.
b) Observing the server’s toss, checking for foot faults and
c) tracking the ball throughout the point
d) Be prepared to overrule an obviously incorrect out or service let call immediately.
e) When the point is completed, what the point loser long enough to make sure there is not behavior problem.
f) Pivot to the adjacent court to observe play on the court.
Professionalism
a) Go where the actions is. If one match is in a tiebreak and the adjacent match has just finished, Assist with ball changes , provide assistance to the active match.
Other Roving Duties
a) Time bathroom visits and apply time violation penalties for lateness.
b) If asked by the Referee, oversee Medical and Bleeding timeouts.
c) Monitor player behavior, make appropriate cautions and/or access Code Violations.
d) Monitor Spectator Behavior and apply Crowd Harassment penalties as warranted.
