Chair Umpire Equipment (seven items)
Required Equipment
a) Stopwatch
b) Tape Measure
c) Flipping Coin
d) Pencils
e) Sunscreen and Sunglasses (if needed)
f) Plastic ties (for repairing broken nets)
g) Appropriate (ITA, conference, NCAA, etc.
Chair Umpire Meeting with Referee (Agenda)
a) Match Format
b) Time allowed for a bathroom break
c) Scoring devices in use (electronic, flip cards, PDA,, scorecard, etc.)
d) Required radio reporting if being used (information to be conveyed, frequency, etc.)
Chair Umpire Meeting
a) Check the layout of the courts.
b) Locate the bathrooms
c) Receive your match assignment(s) and match balls from the Referee
Chair Umpire: Court Preparation
a) Install or remove singles sticks as needed.
b) Check the height and tension of the net.
c) Clear the court of all old balls, used towels and trash.
d) Open the can of balls and check the balls are in good condition (good pressure, don’t rattle, etc).
Chair Umpire: Pre-Match (Three items; set up)
a) Make sure that the right players are on your court. Get Referee if they are the incorrect players
b) Learn how to pronounce the players’ names.
c) Move to the center court, facing the players’ chairs with the balls and coin in hand.
Chair Umpire: Center Court Meeting with Players
a) Remind players to make sure that their opponent and the I (Chair Umpire) can hear their calls.
b) I will overrule incorrect out calls and service lets.
c) I will not overrule upon appeal.
d) I will only call lets for balls coming in if I see you are endangered.
e) You may call a let for other balls that come into the playing area.

Chair Umpire: Center Court Meeting with Players
a) Ask either player to call the toss
b) Player should select choice before the toss.
c) Toss the coin
d) Announce the result with your arm in the direction of the player who won the toss.
e) Say to the winner of the toss, “Your Choice”
f) Choice: serve or receive; end/defer
g) Repeat the choice to make sure you heard correctly
h) Turn to the other player to get their choice.
i) Hand the balls to the players and pick up your coin.

a) After the introduction of the servers, the players be referred to by the school they represent rather than by their individual names.
