Female migrates down the gut and out anus. Lays thousands of eggs knighting in the perinatal area.

What are the clinical manifestations of Enterobiasis Pinworm?

A
  • Generally asymptomatic
  • Mild pruritis ani-perirectal itching/irritation that may affect sleep.
  • scratching leads to spread
  • Occasional vaginitis or fallopian infection/inflammation
  • Easily spread to family members

How do you diagnose Enterobiasis Pinworm?

A
  • Stool exam is NOT useful

- Scotch tape touch prep before defecation/bathing to look for eggs under microscope

How do you treat Enterobiasis Pinworm?

A
  • Pyrantel pamoate (now OTC) followed by repeat dose in 2 weeks.
  • Single dose of mebendazole/albendazole
  • Rx other family members often times
  • Infected persons should bathe in the mornings to remove most of eggs
