Rotation & Revolution with Pictures Flashcards
Rotation
Earth spins on its axis.
This causes daytime and nighttime.
Revolution
Earth revolves around the sun.
One revolution takes 1 year or 365 and 1/4 days.
Revolution (along with the tilt of the axis) makes the Earth have seasons.
Orbit
The path Earth follows around the Sun.
Sun
The star at the center of our solar system.
It gives the planets light and heat.
Axis
The tilted imaginary line that Earth rotates on.
It has a tilt of 23 1/2 degrees.
Daytime
The side of the Earth that has rotated toward the Sun.
Sunlight brightens this half of the Earth.
Nighttime
The side of the Earth that has rotated away from the Sun.
This half of the Earth is in darkness.
Day
= 24 hours = daytime + nighttime
The time it takes for Earth to rotate one time.
Summer
Warmest season of the year.
Summer happens because Earth is tilting toward the Sun and the sunlight is more concentrated in that area, causing temperatures to rise.
Winter
Coldest season of the year.
Winter happens because Earth is tilting away from the Sun and the sunlight is more slanted in that area, causing temperatures to be cold.
Season
4 Seasons = Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
Caused by the revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth’s axis.
Year
= 365 and 1/4 days.
The amount of time it takes Earth to revolve around the Sun.
Length of Earth’s Rotation
One day or 24 hours.
We have daytime and nighttime.
Length of Earth’s Revolution
One year or 365 and 1/4 days to travel completely around the Sun.
The 4 seasons happen over this time for us.
