Elements Of Weather Flashcards
Weather
The observable or measurable parts of the atmosphere at a certain time such as temperature wind speed types of precipitation cloud cover air pressure and humidity.
High air pressure
Brings cooler temperatures and might bring a quick rain or snowstorm. Clear sunny skies with drier air and nicer more easant weather then happen afterwards
Warm Front
The forward edge of a warm air mass
Cold front
The forward edge of a cold air mass
Wind Speed
How fast the wind is moving at a particular time. The faster the wind the faster the clouds and storms move from place to place
Global Winds
Winds that blow over long distances in a predictable direction. Trade winds and jet streams are examples of global winds.
Local Winds
Winds that blow over a small area that are created by changes in temperature over water and land, or mountains and valleys. Examples are: land breeze sea breeze, mountain breeze, and valley breeze.
Thermometer
A weather instrument used for measuring air temperature.
Barometer
A weather instrument used for measuring air pressure
Anemometer
A weather instrument used for measuring wind-speed
Wind Vane/ weather vane
A weather instrument that shows direction (North, South, East or West) the wind is blowing
Precipitation
Liquid or solid form of water that falls from the clouds to earth. Rain snow, sleet, or hail
Humidity
The amount of moisture and water vapor in the area. The higher the humidity the warmer the air feels around you (only living things can feel humidity)
Altitude/Elevation
The height up into the atmosphere from sea level the higher you go up the colder the temperature gets
Latitude
The distance North or South (measured in degrees) of the equator. The farther north or south you move the colder the temperature gets. The suns rays are more direct near the equator. As you move away from the equator the suns rays become more slanted.
