Rotation And Revolution Flashcards
Revolution
The complete trip that Earth makes around the Sun. This takes one year or 365 and 1/4 days. Along with the tilt of Earth’s axis, this trip makes the Earth have seasons.
Rotation
The spinning of Earth on its axis. This causes daytime and nighttime.
Orbit
The path Earth or a planet follows around a star.
Sun
The star at the center of our solar system that gives the planets light and heat.
Axis
The tilted imaginary line that Earth rotates on. It has a tilt of 23 1/2 degrees.
Daytime
The side of the Earth that has rotated toward the Sun. Sunlight brightens this half of the Earth.
Nighttime
The side of the Earth that has rotated away from the Sun. This half of the Earth is in darkness.
Day
The amount of time it takes for Earth to rotate one time. Equal to 24 hours. We experience daytime and nighttime during a Day.
Summer
The warmest season of the year. Summer happens because Earth is tilting toward the Sun and the sunlight is more concentrated in that area, causing temperatures to rise.
Winter
The coldest season of the year. Winter happens because Earth is tilting away from the Sun and the sunlight is more slanted in that area, causing temperatures to be cold.
Season
Caused by the revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the tilt of the Earth’s axis. We experience 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
Year
A year on Earth takes 365 and 1/4 days. This is the amount of time it takes Earth to revolve around the Sun.
Length of Earth’s Rotation
One day or 24 hours. We have daytime and nighttime.
Length of Earth’s Revolution
One year or 365 and 1/4 days to travel around the Sun. The 4 seasons happen over this time for us.
