Rosenzweig and Bennet Flashcards
biological approach
neuroplasticity
aim
to investogate the effects of the environment on brain growth and development
procedure
rats were placed in different cases for 30-60 days. male rats from different litters. they were randomly allocated to two different conditions: enriched or deprived condition. In the enriched condition, there were10-12 rats and was a range of toys and maze training. however in the deprived condition they were alone with no toys, just food and water. the rats were then euthenized and a postmortem study took place, where they measured the weight and thickness of the brain.
results
the rats who lived in the enriched condition developed a heavier and thicker brain cortex. the frontal lobes of the rats in the enriched condition were heavier and they had developed more acetylcholine receptors.
conclusion
provides insight into neurological and cognitive developmental differences that are found in kids from different backgrounds.
