Rule 9 - Narrow Channel

A

A. Keep as near to outer limit, which lies on the starboard side.

B Vessel of less than 20 meters,
Sailing vessels,
Shall not impede the passage of a vessel, which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel.

C. Vessel engaged in fishing shall not impede the passage of ANY other vessel which can safely navigate only within such narrow channel or fairway.

D. Any vessel to not cross narrow channel / fairway if such crossing impedes the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within such narrow channel or fairway.
The latter may use sound signal as per rule 34(d) if in doubt to intentions of the crossing vessel

E. 1. In narrow channel overtaking can take place only if vessel being overtaken takes action to permit safe passing.
2. Overtaking vessel to indicate intention by sounding signal as per 34(c)(i)
=> V/l being overtaken, if in agreement, sounds signal as per rule 34(c)(ii)
=> If in doubt, as per rule 34(d)

F. Vessel nearing bend / area obscured by intervening obstruction to navigate with particular caution and sound signals as per 34(e).

G. Any vessel, if circumstances of the case admit, avoid anchoring in narrow channel.

34(c)(i) => Two prolonged blasts followed by one short blast - I intend to overtake you from Starboard side.
=> Two prolonged blasts followed by two short blasts - I intend to overtake you from your port side.

34(c)(ii) => If in agreement, “One prolonged, one short, one prolonged, one short blast” in this order.

34(d) => Doubt : 5 short blasts.

34(e) => A vessel nearing a bend or an area of a channel or fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction, shall sound one prolonged blast. Such signal shall be answered with a prolonged blast by any approaching vessel that may be within hearing around the bend or behind the intervening obstruction.
