Rooster - Section 7 Flashcards
Bruce as a choreographer
-Use of balletic movement - the female puts the feather boa into his hand and pulls him into DSL doing a step ball change (holding boa at either end) and then he does a parallel attitude, turns out of it then pulls up into a pirouette - shows higher status - like a lead - has control over him
-Symbolic repetition - repetition of the chorus for example when he has his hands clasped together and throws them over his shoulder aggressively and then turns to face the back and points a thumb at himself, then turns away from her he flexes his biceps at front and back towards DS, then he snaps to face her with his finger in the air - warning her not to underestimate him
-The male and female are both SR and the female stamps her foot on the floor between his legs and he brings he knocks his knees in together after she twists her foot on her heel - mocking him - use of Mick Jagger - a source of movement
Subject matter and themes
-Class division - The male dancers stands behind the female dancer both facing US and holds her round the waist and they do a hip rotation together, then he throws her arm and boa away at the same time - he’s dismissing her - doesn’t want her wealth
-Battle of the sexes - She slaps her wrist aggressively on top of his finger and assertively walks away, then he shakes his hand and blows on his fingers like he’s been burnt - distinguishing his flame
-Male chauvinism - He holds the boa over her head towards SL and pulls her and she circles her shoulders back arching her back, then he unravels the boa from her neck and she swivels her feet down to floor to sit cross-legged - taking her wealth away from her
Structure
-Rondo-like structure - repetition of the chorus, for example when he has his hands clasped together and throws them over his shoulder aggressively and then turns to face the back and points a thumb at himself then turns away from her and goes into a macho position flexing is front and back biceps, then he snaps to face her with his finger poitning in the air - ‘don’t play with me because you play with fire’
-‘Your mother she’s an heiress, owns a block in St John’s wood’ - the male parallel par de chas past the female and circles the arms really fast forward and the female throws the boa over the top of him around his waist - using her wealth to get his attention
-Follows the lyrics - ‘You better watch your step girl or start living with your mother’ - He holds the boa over her head towards SL and pulls her and she circles her shoulders back arching her back, then he unravels the boa from her neck and she swivels her feet down to floor to sit cross-legged - taking her wealth away from her
Use of music
-Direct correlation - the male performs the Mick Jagger rubber leg type of movement knocking his knees together on the balls of his feet (use of sitar) before rooster strutting off towards SR
-Use of lyrics - (direct link) he has his hands clasped together and throws them over his shoulder aggressively and then turns to face the back and points a thumb at himself, then faces the front and flexes his biceps then quickly turns round to face the female snapping his finger in the air- ‘don’t play with me because you play with fire’

Use of space
-Symmetrical unison - drop knees in together with the hands and swivel one foot on the ball opening and closing the knee and they turn round and lift the leg in inverted attitude, knee to floor while swivelling the supporting leg and rotate the knee so it goes on top and back out again while arms are in a high V - equality in status - boasting about money
-Male mainly stays SR while female mainly stays SL - shows class divide - she does a mini butterfly jump, legs in attitude towards SR and she turns towards him circling the boa above her head and ends facing the back, swinging her hips from side to side and rubs the boa on the back of the top of her thighs - crossing status boundaries - going into his personal space - teasing him - entitlement
relationship - contact work - personal space
-The male holds the feather boa over the females head towards SL and pulls her in while she rolls her shoulders backwards and leans her head back then he unravels the boa from her neck and swivels her feet to the floor to sit in a cross-legged position - use of levels - he is jealous of her wealth - battle in power - taking her wealth away from her
