Events of 1865
Abraham Lincoln (16th) was assassinated. He served from 1861-1865. His VPs were Hannibal Hamlin and Andrew Johnson. teddy Roosevelt (26th) was only 6 years old at the time.
Eleanor
Eleanor Roosevelt was the first person to receive a standing ovation at the United Nations. It was for her work on passing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Election of 1932
FDR ran for president and in his inaugural speech he gave the quote about fear. He was the 32nd president and was in office from 1933-1945. He also had fireside chats.
He created the New Deal to fix the country because it was the worst year of the Great Depression. This was a series of EXPERIMENTAL projects and programs. He saved some failing banks and helped workers, farmers, etc. he ended prohibition (21st amendment). He created the Agricultural Adjustment Act, Social Security Act, Works Progress Administration, Tennessee Valley Authority Act to build dams along Tennessee River and prevent flooding, Public Works Administration, National Industrial Recovery Act
Spanish American War
- Started under William McKinley Jr. Cuba wanted independence from Spain, a battle that started in 1895. The Spanish were portrayed negatively, and the sinking of the UsS Maine In 1898 prompted U.S. Intervention.
General Dewey marched into Manila Bay in the Philippines and crushed the Spanish. General Shafter, Roosevelt, and the Rough Riders marched into Santiago in Cuba and defeated the Spanish there. Cervera of Spain surrendered.
Treaty of Paris in 1898 games the U.S. Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rico from Spain. Spain was left to focus on itself, leading to cultural growth. The U.S. Emerged a world power.

campobello Island. There is a Roosevelt National Parl here. He spent a lot of time here before contracting polio. Eleanor visited here before her death in 1962. This is a symbol of cooperation between the U.S. And Canada.
