Romeo And Juliet - Tybalt Quotes Flashcards
“Fetch me my rapier, boy”
Tybalt’s character after having only heard the sound of Romeo’s voice is willimg to resort to violence after having not even thought about it.
This immediate fall to anger and vengeance shows the audience that Tybalt is the villian of the play.
“I’ll not endure him! …He shall be endured”
Tybalt forcefully declares his anguish to Lord Capulet who in fact respectively dismisses his nephew as having heard Romeo to be a ‘virtous and well-governed youth’.
Capulet clearly does not want to fight, but most of all he doesnt want Tybalt to ‘make a mutiny among my guests’. (disturbance)
“convert to bitterest gall!”
We learn in this scene how Tybalt wants his revenge upon Romeo for firstly intruding at his families feast, but mostly for the missed fued that would have happened at the feast for if it wasnt because of Capulet wanting to keep peace.
The fact Capulet shut down Tybalts fiery attitude almost insults his pride; making him only wanting to fight back more.
Turn thee, Benvolio! look upon thy death.
He is provoking Benvolio to a fight by making fun of him, implying that he is not a real man until he turns and fights with a worthy opponent - Tybalt.
“Peace? I hate that word”
He is questioning Benvolio for having a sword out and talking about peace at the same time.
He repeats the word “hate” when talking about hell and all Montagues.
He carries this fued with him everywhere he goes. He uses Montague and hell in the same phrase which shows that, that is what he thinks of them, almost like a comparison.
“You are a saucy boy.”
Capulet insults Tybalt
“saucy” - implies that he is rude and has a lack of respect for people.
“boy” - infantilises him - suggests that Tybalt is immature because he is always looking for an opportunity to fight to improve his reputation of being a man.
