Q

Unrequited love

A

Mostly portrayed though R infatuation for Rosaline . Instead f joy it makes him feels depressed and have a negative attitude on love

Act 1 Scene 1

R uses oxymorons such as “Obrawling love,o loving hate” to express his emotions. The verb “brawl” is used as an adjective annd has connotations of fighting which emphasises conflict in the play

The oxymoron between “Brawling” and “Love” represents the contrast between R+ J love with the quarrel g and violence of the feud
Foreshadows the amount of violence which will occur during the play which creates inner conflict for character such as Romeo as he wants to defend hounour but he loves the enemy

The unbending list of oxymoron from “father of lead” “bright smoke” “cold fire” “2sick health” suggests Romeo cant comprehend hat is in front of him and the confusion of love. This strongly alludes to Romeo’s immature and inexperienced character, and his tendency to make rushed decisions

This immaturity and smashes is intensified in act 2 scene 2 hon Juliet says “2 too rash, too unadvisedly, too sudden, too like the lightning”
The asymmetric list builds to the simile which encapsulates Romeo’s character as someone who is reckless and impulsive

Q

Religion and love

A

The pure and chaste religious imagery when r +j meet is contrasted din act 5 scene 3 where the imagery becomes sexualised. In many cultures sez is a way of consulting marriage and completes the unification of the couple , here the couple are unified to death. The sexual imagery is symbolic of their utility in the afterlife

In addition in act 1 cent 5 Romeo and Juliet use religious imagery to talk to eachother
They may have done this as it wa common totalled about religion but it ma be interpreted that they saw eachother as a divine presence and a power, this may lead to the idea that do to their belief in the divine power of eachother they are almost issuing their fate

R says “2If i Profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine , the gentle sin is this,
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready to stand smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss”2

Juliet replies with “Good pilgrim, you do wrong with your hand too much, Which mannerly devotion shows in this, for saints hand that pilgrim hands do touch, and palm to Pam is holy palmers kiss”

r “2o then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do:They pray, grant thou , lest faith turn to despair “
this blasphemous language alludes to the idea that they are breaking the 10 commandments which may to some audience a reason to belve that they will be punished in the bible it says “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)

Physical Love

A

Physical love is explored throughout the play but sometimes in a more sexual or physical way describing beauty or even describing attractive features

In act 1 scene 4 Mercurio says if love be rough with you , you be rough with love” this alludes to the sexual nature of love which is f physical and not pure . This also suggests love can be “2rough emotionally” and this is eveident fro the way Romeo suffers from unrequited love

In act 2 scene 1 - Mercutio subverts the convention of romantic poetry when describing Rosalines body. He lists her body parts saying
“I conjure thee by Rosaline’s bright eyes, By her high forehead a dn her secret lip, by her fine foot, straight leg and quivering thigh”2 here mercutio is is reducing what was previously a love-filled romance for Rosalind to nothing but a sexual description of her body

“First shows his lack of emotional understanding in this seven adn seats that “2young mens love lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes2 disregarding that love is from the heart could be seen as Shakespeare shining the light on the spierficial nature of love, perhaps clacking the whole play in irony and showing a fresh view of love, which contradicts the more romantic lay idealised conventions of the time. The idea is further explored as the friar says Romeo was only doting for rosaline

Th sexual from of love form of love is not just focused on by the men but also by the nurse. The nurse checks out Romeo’s body and moments that his “legs excels all men’s” the nurses sexualised view of Romeo contrast the emotional attachment Juliet feels towards him,Shakespeare is stressing his Romeo and Juliet’s love transcends the conventional ideas of love that we see from the nurse and Mercutio

Also “o she doth teach the torches to burn bright”2
Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear” here Romeo is used ping physicals beaty to convey his love for Juliet he hasn’t spoke to her so link to friars comment about men loving with their eyes
