What was the litterator, what did people learn at this stage of education and how?
- Boys and girls would learn reading, writing and basic arithmetic at this stage.
- It was very basic and repetitive at this stage-letters was practiced over and over again and once this was done right, they had to learn and copy out useful phrases, such as loborare est orare.
- They used wax tablets, which pupils wrote on with a stilus. They would eventually move on from this to a pen and ink on a papyrus.
How did the grammaticus develop the boys’ knowledge and skills?
- Greek and Latin literature was taught at this stage, which included the likes of poetry, drama, history and philosophy. -This used their skills of reading from the first stage of education

Did the Rhetor prepare the students for adult life?
- They were taught the art of public speaking , which is a valuable and crucial skill in a world without other means of communication that we have today.
- They were taught to deliver speeches with facial expression and hand gestures.
- They practiced speaking by arguing about issues from history or literature.
- This is similar to a barrister’s training today, and many of Rome’s most leading politicians were also lawyers.
What happened before the sacrifice?
- A time was appointed with a priest of the relevent temple.
- On this day, the roman would go to the market to buy an an animal, which had to have no blemish in order for the gods to approve.
- The sacrificer would wear his best toga, tie ribbons to the animal and lead it through the streets to the temple.
- If it stumpled along the way, this was considered a bad omen and the process may have had to be started again.
Why were the sacrifices outside of the temple?
- It was done on the altar outside the temple so that:
- everyone could see
- So that when the meat was cooking it wouldnt harm the temple and could go to the gods.
- The practice was messy and it was done outside so that the blood could be easily cleaned up after.
Was the most important part of the sacrifice was after the killing of the animal?
Yes.
-the importance of praising and recognising the gods
through the burning of the animal’s bodyparts
-the examination of the insides of the animal to test for bad omens
-giving the meat to the spectators and those involved.
What were the main duties of the Roman wife?
- main role was to manage the household, although it was not uncommon for them to visit friends or public places.
- assigning slaves to various duties (cooking cleaning fetching water)
- Manage the spinning and weaving in the house, since they tried to produce as many of their own clothes as possible.
- most importantly, to produce and bring up children (overseeing nursing and ensure they went to school and learn their duties).
Why was the roman wife important?
- she was vital in running the daily life of the family.
- played a big role in the upbringing and lives of her children.
- producing heirs was a very big and important duty.
- she ran dinner parties and other events, which reflected the position and appearance of the family in society.
How limited was the life of the roman wife?
- It differed whether you were rich or poor, some rich women enjoyed great luxury.
- Due to the sexism at the time, she had little say in society and could not vote.
- the father dictated most of her life: who she saw and what she did and when she wanted a divorce this was often difficult to arrange or was unlikely.
