Why was the life of a slave miserable?

A
  • It depended on the masters character. In the early empire he had total rights over the slave and so could treat them horribly or kill them, or subjecting them to verbal, physical or sexual abuse.
  • They had no rights to property or relationships or any political rights of any kind.
  • Some slaves endured hard and dangerous work, which subjected them to grim conditions with granted them with a relatively low life expectancy.
