Pompeii Flashcards

Q
How did the layout of the amphitheatre suit its purposes?
A
- As it was a large theatre that sat lots of people, it had lots of archways so it meant that people could get in and out with ease.
- The tiered seating, which was divided by class (the most prominent Pompeian at the front) and the elliptical-shaped arena made the view excellent no matter where you sat.

Q
What happened at the riot and what did the emperor do about it?
A
The historian Tacitus recounts a slanging match between spectators who came from a town of Nuceria
This fight became violent, stones were thrown originally, which escalated to swords being drawn
This led to a full-scale fight breaking out and many died as a result.
The emperor was concerned of the news between the towns and ordered the Senate to hold an investigation. This led to Pompeii becoming banned from hosting games in the amplitheatre for 10 years.
