Romantic Flashcards
Diminution
A decrease in the length of themes notes. This usually increases intensity and feeling of pace.
Added 6th
A chord with root, 3rd, 5th and 6th e.g. C, E, G, A.
Augmentation
Where a theme or motif is presented in longer note values than were previously used. It gives the effect of the music ‘slowing down’ or ‘broadening’.
3 against 2
A type of cross rhythm in which 3 beats are against 2
Tremolando
Literally “trembling”. Rapid repetition of a note (stringed instrument) or rapid alternation of two notes.
Diminished Triad
A minor triad with a flattened 5th creating two minor 3rd intervals. This creates dissonance and therefore tension.
Lied
A German song from the Romantic period for voice and piano in which both parts are important.
