Chamber Music
Music written for small groups of instruments. It includes only music that is performed by a small number of performers with one performer to a part. “Chamber” shows the music can be played in a small room often private. Includes solos, duets, trios & quartets.
String Quartet
This is comprised of two violins, a viola and a cello.
Triplets
A group of three notes played in the time of two.
Sonata
A work for piano or a solo instrument with piano accompaniment.
Harmonics
The high eerie sounds produced on a string instrument by lightly touching the string at certain points. Harmonics can be played on any instrument with strings e.g. violin or guitar.
Coloratura
The term coloratura refers to the elaborate ornamentation of a melody. Coloratura sopranos specialise in the music that is distinguished by agile runs and leaps.
Diminished 7th Chord
The diminished seventh chord is composed of a root note, together with a minor third, a diminished fifth and a diminished seventh above the root. Sense of impending doom.
Dominant 7th Chord
Chord(H): The dominant 7th chord is composed of a root, major third, perfect fifth, and minor seventh. The Dominant seventh is built on the fifth (or dominant) note of the scale.
