Romans 4 Flashcards
What is the main idea in Romans chapter 4
It talks about the nature of faith and righteousness, using Abraham as a key example, as a Jew that was justified by faith
In Romans 4:1- 3 what does it say about Abrahams justification?
That if he was justified by works, he would have reason to boast before God instead, it talks about how he believe God, and that was credited to him as righteousness
In 4:4-5 what is the relationship between works wages and grace?
Grace is contrasted with work. When you work you are paid, and those wages are counted as your due but for someone who doesn’t work, they’re not owed something this is where Grace comes in. God gives it and justifies the ungodly, despite the being owed death.
In 4:6-8 Paul quotes David from Psalms, what is he praising?
The blessedness of God, forgiving people apart from works
In 4:9-12 Paul continues the idea that forgiveness is by God apart from works. What does he say about Abraham and circumcision?
That the blessing is not just for the circumcised. He gives the example of how Abraham was circumcised after he believed as a mark of his belief. Not that circumcision was the main point.
What does Romans 4:13 say about the promise to Abraham?
The promise to Abraham or his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
How did Abraham respond to the promise of God according to Romans 4:18-21?
Against all hope, Abraham believed in hope and did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God.
What does Romans 4:22-24 say about the purpose of the Scripture talking about righteousness?
The Scripture stating “it was credited to him as righteousness” applies not only to Abraham but also to those who believe in God who raised Jesus.
What is the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection according to Romans 4:25?
Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
