-Had to walk under beam = yoke of submission (looking like an ox, pulling the plow)
-First time someone condemned in Rome can appeal to the populace

First used only for marital faults like adultery, infertility, etc. but changed over time to be a mutual decision
Slaves
- Property of the paterfamilias and had no freedom of their own
- Teachers, accountants, etc. all slaves
- Unlike Roman citizens, they could be executed, exploited, tortured
- Roman slaves could hold property (belonging to their masters), skilled/educated slaves could earn their own money and save enough for their freedom
Freed Slave
- Could become Roman citizens, ‘libertas’
- Freedman, client of former master (patron), paid ceremonial visits in honor to his master (salutation) - in the atrium of the family house in the morning
Housing
-Typical Atrium style or Insulae (apartments)
Funerary
- The dead is carried in a procession, then placed reclining. They then read the virtues/accomplishments of the person, then buried
- Dressed as they would when alive
- Consuls or praetors = gown bordered with purple
- Censors = purple robe
- Triumphed =vest embroidered with gold
