What do splints do?
stabilizes an extremity
- minimizes pain of dislocations, fractures, soft tissue injuries, & post op pain
how do you apply a splint
distal part of extremity to the proximal part
What should do before you apply splint
remove jewelry from that extremity
after applying splint
check circulation, movement, & sensation
non-weight bearing
patient’s affected leg cannot touch the floor
touch- down weight bearing
patient’s affected leg can only touch the floor for balance
partial weight bearing
the patient’s affected leg can only bear a portion of body weight
weight bearing is tolerated
patient is able to stand or walk on affected leg, bearing an amount of body weight only as tolerated
full weight bearing
patient can bear full weight on affected leg
ostomy wafer should be cut
1/16 larger than circumference of the stoma
when should you empty an ostomy bag
when it is half full

move arm in a full circle, combining the other shoulder movements
