what were the roles of slaves in Anglo-Saxon society?
To work (the land?) of nobles. slaves could be sold/bought/freed according to the will of their master

Had lots of support from people
Had fair laws
Was religious
Led a strong military
What was the Role of an Earl?
Provide lots of military to the king
Gave king good advice
Payed their taxes
Maintained relationships with local thegns
What was the role of the sheriff in Anglo Saxon times?
To act on the Kings behalf but had to answer to the earl as they were beneath the earl. Maintained law and order in their shires and local courts and collected taxes for the king

What were the changes from Anglo Saxon slaves to Norman slaves
Lots of slaves were freed in Norman times as the Normans did not agree with the concept of slavery
Roles of a Norman King
Owned all land and simply loaned it and took it away as a reward or a punishment for the way people behaved towards him
had strong military
Roles of Barons (tenants in chief)
had to support the king and help provide military as well as pay taxes for the king in exchange of land
Roles of Sub Tenants (knights)
Had to perform 40 days of knight service a year and using the rest of the time to maintain land let to them by their Barons
Roles of Peasants in Norman England
Had to farm and maintain land of knights in exchange for small portions of land and protection of knights whilst under attack
What were the changes in roles of sheriffs from Anglo Saxon England in comparison to the ones in Norman England
Sheriffs became above the Barons so they only represented the king therefore could go above the choice of the barons. Sheriffs kept some of the tax money that they collected. Sheriffs were nobles.
