Role Of The PTA In Neurologic Rehabilitation Flashcards
Traditionally, what was neurological rehab management based on and what were the interventions directed at?
neurological rehab management of
adults and children was based on the knowledge of
the disease and interventions were directed at
improving the signs and symptoms
What is the current view?
Current view has evolved to a health status model
based on disability (Nagi Disability Model)
What does the Nagi Disablement Model describe?
Describes relationship between health and function
What are the four components to the Nagi?
disease, impairments, functional limitations, and disability
What is Disease?
pathologic state with signs and symptoms that
disrupt the homeostasis or internal balance
What are Impairments?
alterations in anatomic, physiologic, or
psychological structures of function
What are Functional Limitations?
impairments cause inability to
perform everyday activities that are considered part of the
normal routine
What is Disability?
results when functional limitations become so
great that individual is unable to meet age-specific
expectations in the social or physical environment
When do the four components evolve?
Four components of model evolve as the individual
loses health
What can society’s attitudes result in?
Society’s attitudes can result in the communities
perception that someone is handicapped
What does the Nagi direct caregivers to focus on?
Model directs caregivers to focus on the relationship
between the impairment and functional limitation
and the individual’s ability to perform everyday
activities
What are the outcomes of using the Nagi?
Increased independence in the home and
community and improvements in quality of life are
expected outcomes
What is function related to?
Function is related to age-specific
roles in a given
environment
What does functional performance include?
Functional performance includes personal characteristics, the environment, and the social expectations placed on the individual’s performance
What does the performance of these skills do?
Performance of these skills enhances the individual’s
physical and psychological well being
How is performance affected?
Performance is affected by physical, emotional, and
cognitive abilities, and the ability to interact with
others
What factors may affect the disability process?
Congenital and genetic predisposition to disease,
demographics, comorbidities, lifestyle choices, health
habits, and environmental factors may also affect the
disability process
What should the PT critically examine?
A patient’s Stability, Acuity, Criticality, and Complexity
What should the PT consider?
-Practice setting
-Type of interventions to be provided
-Patient’s probable outcome
-Knowledge base, experience, and training of PTA
-Consult the APTA and State Practice Acts for specific
documentation and supervision requirements
• PTs must supervise PTAs
What does the PTA provide?
therapeutic interventions to improve
functional independence, educates the
patient/family, assists with data collection, and
provides input for discharge planning
What is the PTA expected to have knowledge of?
positioning
and handling, use of adaptive equipment,
management of abnormal tone, and developmental
activities that foster functional motor skills and
movement transitions
How do some PTs view pediatrics as?
Some PTs still view pediatrics as a specialty area of
practice
What does the APTA state about pediatrics and PTAs?
The APTA Section on Pediatrics (1997) states that the
PTA is qualified to assist in pediatric services under
the direction and supervision of a PT
What do they recommend that PTAs not do?
Recommended that a PTA not provide services to
children who are physiologically unstable or if their
condition requires multiple adjustments of
sequences and procedures due to rapidly changing
status and/or response to treatment
Who may be the first to observe problems or be informed of parent’s concerns?
PTA (needs to be communicated to PT in a timely manner)
What is the relationship between the PT and PTA characterized by?
trust, mutual respect, and an appreciation for
individual and cultural differences
