Q

How does your skin respond when you are too hot?

A

Lots of sweat is produced - when it evaporates it transfers energy from your skin into the environment, cooling you down
Blood vessels close to the surface of the skin widen - this is called vasodilation and it allows more blood to flow near the surface so it can transfer more energy into the surroundings which cools you down
Hairs lie flat

Q

How does your skin respond when you are too cold?

A

Very little sweat is produced
Blood vessels near the surface in the skin constrict. This means less blood flows near the surface, so less energy s transferred to the surroundings
You shiver, which increases your rate of respiration which transfers more energy to warm your body
Hairs stand on end to trap an insulating layer of air, which helps keep you warm.
