Q

How do nerves control responses?

A

Receptors detect stimuli, receptors are usually in the sense organs and they are groups of cells that detect external stimuli. Eg: rod, cone cells detect stimulus in the eyes

Effectors then bring out a response to the stimuli. They include muscle cells found in glands ed: the pancreas. Muscle cells contract while glands secrete hormones

Receptors communicate with the effectors via the nervous system , the hormonal system or sometimes both

Q

How does the central nervous system coordinate information?

A

The nervous system is made up of all the neurones in your body, the three main types being sensory, relay and motor. When receptors in a sense organ detect stimulus they send electrical impulses along the sensory neurone to the CNS. The CNS then sends electrical impulses to an effector along a motor neurone. The effector then responds

Q

How quick are nerve responses?

A

Very quick as neurones transport information at high speeds using high speed electrical impulses

Q

What are the differences between hormone action and nerve action?

A

Hormones are slow messages - nerves are fast messages
Hormones act for a long time - nerves act for a shorter time
Hormones act in a general area - nerves act in a precise area
