Role of Radiologist in OC Flashcards
3 main roles?
Diagnosing
Staging
Surveillance
When is radiologist not needed?
If ‘SCC’ - more beneficial dx test e.g ultrasound/ biopsy
Purpose of staging?
Define extent of primary cancer and structures it is invading/ structures may be involves in resection
Mainstay of radiological staging?
MRI imaging
What use is MRI contra-indication?
CT
Why is staging important?
Helps select the most appropriate treatment options
Help predict prognosis
Difference between M0 and M1?
MO = no distant metastases M1 = metastasis present
What dose ENE stand for?
Extra-nodal extesnion
What is ENE?
Spread of carcinoma through fibrous capsule of node into surrounding soft tissue
Issue w/ lymph node spread?
Survival falls by half when compare N0 to N1
Survival of oral cavity cancer?
47% at 5 years
Common site of metastasis?
Chest - lymph nodes or lungs
Chest imaging included diagnostic tests
How are pt monitored?
Usually MRI
Adv of repeated imaging/same modality?
Used to monitor sites - comparison
How are pt monitored if clinical exam and MRI uncertain?
PET - measure glucose metabolism (cancer cells more metabolically active)
