role of education- functionalism Flashcards
what are the 4 points of view for the role of education
marxist
functionalist
new right
postmodernist
There are 4 sociologist point of views who all hold a view on the role of education. Name all 4 and their view
functionalist- Education helps society function and serves the economy
Marxist- legitimises class inequality and prevent rebellion
New right- the state fails to run education so it should be run through parentocracy
post modernist- education is becoming more diverse
who is the founder of functionalism
Durkheim
FUNCTIONALISM - what is social solidarity? What sociologist says this?
Give example
Durkheim
when individuals feel to be part of a single body, without it society would fail.
E.g. learning a countried history instils a collective shared heritage.
FUNCTIONALISM DURKHEIM - how does school act as a mini society.
Give an example-
school prepares us for wider society by making school similar to a work place
-uniform, working with people who aren’t friends nor family, someone in charge
FUNCTIONALISM- what is parsons idea of school acting as a bridge
Parsons says school acts as a bridge from family to society.
Bridge from ascribed status to the achieved status
People earn status through hard work
FUNCTIONALISM- what is the role allocation idea
sorting and sifting of children by assessing their ability and knowledge
Children with more work ethic, talent, knowledge are out in higher sets and eventually get better jobs and roles in society
what type of theory is a functionalist theory
consensus theory- society functions of a shared basis of norms and values and sense of homogeneity
what does homogeneity mean
everyone being similar
who are the main sociologists in the functionalist role of education
durkheim
parsons
bowles and gintis
schultz
sumarrist durkheims views on role of education
- secondary socialisation, teaches societal norms. creates a fully functioning individual who abides by social expectations. this socialisation instills social rules and acceptable behaviour
social solidarity- education provides a feeling of unity between individuals by teaching. e.g. history lessons teaching country background.
education teaches specialist skills for the social division of labor. Due to society changing from a pre industrial society to a modern industrial society, knowledge is more advanced, therefore education teaches the knowledge needed to work
school prepares for society- by exposing children to individuals they have no relationship with. also replicates the workplace
how does school replicate the workplace
uniform
authority
punctuality
workload
team work with people you have no relationships with.
functionalist is a macro approach. what does that mean
analyses society
evaluate durkheim
deterministic- not every child absorbs the societal values transmitted through secondary socialisation
education passes values of bourgeoise
What is parsons view of the role of education
Bridge from family and ascribed status to society and achieved status
Encourages meritocracy as individuals have to work hard for a good status
What are some evaluations of Durkheim
armchair theorist- his research is just analysis no research or evidence
Secondary socialisation benefits the bourgeoise as they state what societies values are
Evaluate parsons
Armchair theorist
Education isn’t meritocratic, middle class will always have the upper hand due to their cultural capital
What did Davis and moor say
Education provides role allocation
What did Schultz say
Spending on education is justified as it increases individual human capital
Investment creates a strong economy which makes society stable
Creates a specialised division of labour to compete in a global market effectively
What is human capital
The skills, knowledge and experience gained by an individual to produce economic value
What is the difference between cultural and human capital
They are both the same
Except human capital is for economic value
Where as cultural capital is for social mobility
