Role Of Education Flashcards
Durkheim
- specialist skills (gives us the skills we need to play our role in society)
- social solidarity (through sharing norms and values, put on us through socialisation)
Parsons
Role is meritocracy - prepares us for the model of society (meritocracy)
Davis and moore
Role allocation - education selects the highest abilities to give them the most difficult jobs e.g. pilot or surgeon
Chubb and moe
State education fails to meet any roles and they call for privitisation/marketisation
- failed to give equal opp
- failed to give skills needed in society
- priv education does it better
Priv skl did 5% better
Chubb and moe 2 roles of the state
- frame work for comp, e.g. league tables
- ensure a shared culture through national curriculum
Counter for new right
Gerwirtz and Ball - competition only benefit m/c - myth of parentocracy
Alrhuseer
ISA
Role is to ensure capitalism maintains ruling. Does this through ISA and RSA.
Education - reproduces class inequality and justifies it
Bowles and Gintis
Hidden curriculum and correspondence principle
School mimics work (corresponds) and therefore skl prepares kids for exploitation of work through the hidden curriculum, e.g. same heirachy as work, shows w/c need to obey.
Myth of meritocracy
Bowles and gintis say meritcracy is a myth, designed to justify why poor are poor and rich are rich. It shows the poor that if they work hard they can be rich.
But research shows the main factor to whether or not you have a high income is class not achievement or ability
Willis
Shows pupils can resist education and it’s hidden curriculum etc.
12 w/c boys, they resist school by smoking and truanting and notice that meritocracy is a ‘con’.
They saw manual work as superior.
However by resisting school they end up same un skilled jobs the school wanted them to have anyway.
Evaluation of marxist role of education
- think kids are all passive (willis shows otherwise)
- ignores other factors like ethnicity etc
- ignores fact schools reproduce patriarchy too
