one role is to maintain law and order
This is when the police patrol the streets on foot or by car and monitor CCTV footage.
They are able to arrest people they have witnessed committing a crime or that they suspect have committed a crime.
another role is to investigate crime
This is when either uniformed officers or detectives gather evidence such as forensic evidence, witness statements or video evidence.
If the police gather enough evidence, the suspect will be charged and go to court
one power is the power of arrest
This means that the police can arrest anyone when they believe they are involved in a crime - whether it be a witness, suspect or perpetrator.
People can be held in custody for a maximum of 24 hours if they are a suspect for a crime.
another power is the power to search property
This means that the police can search your home/property with a warrant or the persons permission.
They can only enter without a warrant if they hear cries for help or to sort out a disturbance.
