Confidentiality is how health care personnel treat private information once it has been disclosed (eg communication between physician and patient)
Trust, reliance, respect and security are key principles associated with Confidentiality.
What does “Security” mean?
Security is the tools and techniques used to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of health information. (Eg. keeping computer screen out of view of public, and having the requestor complete a written authorization for information - 2 ways HIM can prevent unauthorized release of health information)
What does “Privacy” mean?
Privacy is a broader concept of both confidentiality and security. Privacy focuses on the PERSON and is the ‘right’ of the individual to have their own personal information kept private - meaning the patient has the right to control how, when, who has access, and for what purposes their information is released.
