Rods and Cones Flashcards
1
Q
Light detection in the dark
A
Na + diffuses through open channels Diffuses down conc gradient Actively pumped out Membrane is depolarised Neurotransmitters called glutamate are released and bind to bipolar cells preventing depolarising so no action potential
2
Q
Light detection in light
A
Rhodopsin absorbs the light and breaks down to teinal and opsin
Opsin activates a cascade of reactions that result in the closing of the non specific cation channels
Na+ ions continue to be pumped out
Membrane becomes hyperpolarised
No neurotransmitters so Na+ channels open and membrane is depolarised
