Brain Flashcards
Cerebullum
Co-ordinating movement and balance
Checks whether the motor programme being used is correct
Temporal lobe
Processing auditory info ie hearing, speech, sound recognition
Memory
Parietal lobe
Orientation, movement, sensation, calculation, recognition
Occipital lobe
Processing info from eyes ie vision, colour, shape recognition and perspective
Frontal lobe
Planning, reasoning, decision making
Forming association and ideas
Hypothalamus
beneath the middle part of the brain, maintains the body temp
Medulla oblongata
Controls breathing and heart rate
MRI
Investigation: Higher quality for soft tissue, difference between abnormal and normal, function only worked out by looking at damaged areas
Medical: Damaged or diseased areas of brain - Tumour cells respond differently in magnetic field, show up lighter, exact size of tumour and its location
3D
CT
Investigation - Major structures not functions
Medical - Blood has different densitry (lighter), extent and location of bleeding, work out blood vessels damaged
Radiation and x-rays
2D - brain disease - monitor over illness
fMRI
Investigation: detailed and high resolution picture of structure and function
Medical: Study conditions caused by abnormal activity in the brain ie scan before and during seizure find cause
Human acitivites 3D
More oxygenated blood flows to active areas - respond differently
PET
Investigating: very detailed and for both
Medical: show if areas are inactive or not
Radioactive tracer into tissues and scanner detects the radioactivity of the tracer
3D - cancers
