Human Genome Project Flashcards
What does HGP stand for?
Human Genome Project
What is the HGP?
13 year long project that identified all genes found in human DNA (human genome)
Highlighted common genetic variations between people
What is info for HGP stored in?
Databases
What do scientists do with the information?
Used them to identify genes and proteins involved in disease and create new drugs that target the identified proteins
What do drug companies with variation?
Drug companies design new drugs tailered to those with the variation as it makes the drugs less effective
What are the social moral and ethical issues?
More expensive creating a two-tier health service
Refused drug due to genetic makeup as it would be that effective
Information could be used by employers to discriminate
Revealing a drug might not work could be psychologically damaging
What were the aims of the HGP?
Work out entire sequences of bases in the genome
Determine location of all genes
How genes determine our phenotype
Describe personalised medicine
Tested to find out mutation causing disease
Drugs targeted at them
less trial and error in drug finding
Right drug and dose
